Meet Hyeon Ji Guk, registrar at the Yonsei GSIS Office. She oversees administrative operations for the Global Citizenship and Sustainable Development (GCSD) and Global Citizenship and Cooperation (GCC) programs. In addition, Hyeon Ji supports students in their academic pursuits and promotes many student activities and events.

In this interview, Hyeon Ji offers her expertise in the two programs that provide a multilingual learning experience.

-Can you explain what tasks you do on your typical day at the office?

-My name is Hyeon Ji Guk. I am the Yonsei GSIS Office's registrar, mainly working for GCSD and GCC. I am responsible for the overall administrative tasks related to major operations. For example, I focus on student record management, course registration, degree conferral, and graduation requirement verification. I also deal with academic policies (such as basic regulations), student support, and counseling. My other tasks include promoting the majors and providing general support for the GCC and GCSD events.

-Can you tell us more about the GCC and GCSD programs? What is unique about them?

The GCSD Program provides a multilingual curriculum, mainly in Korean but also in English, Chinese, and Japanese. It offers courses in three key areas: First, Sustainable Development and Environmental, Social, and Governance Standards); second, on Humanity in Global Policy; and third, on the topic of the Korean Peninsula and East Asian cooperation.

The GCC Program offers a unique interdisciplinary curriculum that is close to practice. This program is mainly conducted in Chinese but offers elective courses in Korean and English. This program aims to provide students with the analytic tools to deal with international issues in multifaceted areas. Moreover, this program aims to raise every student’s awareness of what it means to be a global citizen and the responsibility and impact they can have in an increasingly globalized world.

-What do you enjoy most about your role at the Yonsei GSIS Office?

I enjoy assisting students with the registration and enrollment process, records management, degree conferral, and other tasks. I also like supporting student activities by helping promote various events at GSIS. In my work, it is gratifying to help Chinese students with language barrier issues in administrative matters, as I can assist in bridging the gap between student concerns and the office. I also enjoy the diversity and cultural exchange that GSIS offers me in an international environment, which makes it an attractive working environment. My work allows me to gain international experience through close working together and communication with international students, which is very rewarding overall.

-What are the most common challenges you have seen for Yonsei GSIS students, and do you have any advice for these?

The most common challenges I see for students are often related to academic issues and cultural adaptation, mainly during the first semester. General academic challenges can be confusion during registration, difficulties with the course registration process, or problems with academic management. Naturally, some challenges and fears are common while earning a degree, but I feel that international students face difficulties adapting to the Korean culture and learning environment. To overcome any situation, I recommend students better understand academics but also seek specific help from professors, advisors and administrators that the GSIS provides. We are all here to help! I also encourage students to experience Korean culture and make friends through various activities outside their studies. These events will enrich their cultural experience. It would also be helpful for students to communicate and collaborate with students from other majors to share experiences and get advice from each other.

-How can interested students access more information about GCC and GCSD? How can they contact you?

You can learn more about each major and its curriculum on the school's website. If you have any questions about the majors, or if already enrolled students have any questions, feel free to contact me at frnrguswl@yonsei.ac.kr.

-Thank you for your time, Hyeon Ji. It was very insightful!
