This month, the Graduate Student Association (GSA), GSIS brought the excitement of competitive gaming to campus with its first-ever Esports Tournament, giving students the opportunity to engage in a friendly competition and showcase their teamwork in a unique setting. The main goal of the event was to strengthen community ties among GSIS students through a fun and strategic multiplayer game: League of Legends.

The game was selected based on a students’ poll conducted by GSA, allowing everyone in the GSIS community to vote for their preferred title. League of Legends received the most votes, setting the stage for an exhilarating tournament.

The initial phase of the competition was held on May 17th at a PC Cafe in Sinchon, where teams went head-to-head in a series of matches. Each team was made up of five students registering either individually or as preformed groups. In total, four teams participated, demonstrating not only gaming skills, but also collaboration and friendly competitiveness.

For those unable to attend in person, the matches were live streamed on the Yonsei GSA YouTube channel.

The final took place on May 23rd at both a PC Cafe in Sinchon and on campus, where students gathered to cheer for the finalists. During the event GSA organized a giveaway event for attendees - prizes including a massage tool, Jeju fruit tea, Yonsei GSIS merchandise, and more. Recognition was given to the top 2 teams. The winning team, Yonsei T1, received gold medals, K-tag coupons, and a personalized trophy.

Through this initiative, GSA has successfully brought students together in a new and exciting way, proving that at GSIS, competition, community and fun go hand in hand, even in the virtual world.
