[Newsletter] Insights from Global Leaders: Highlights from the CIS Special Lecture Series

The Center for International Studies (CIS) at the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) held a Special Lecture Series in May that helped students understand major events taking place in the global theatre in contemporary times. Throughout May, CIS -the research wing at the GSIS that undertakes various kinds of research projects in as diverse and crucial academic fields as international relations, international trade and finance, development, and security- hosted some of the top leaders working in the international fields and helped foster a more comprehensive understanding of the global issues amongst the students.


Korean Diaspora and ROK-US Alliance: A Diplomat’s Perspective 
This event, held on May 29, 2024, hosted an esteemed diplomat, Ambassador Sei-joong Kwon, currently serving as an Ambassador at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Korea.

Speaking as US-ROK diplomatic relations recently reached the milestone of being over 140 years old, Ambassador Kwon talked at length about the history of the US-ROK Alliance and delved into Korean migration to the US. He also talked about the prospects of the Alliance and stressed the critical role of the Korean diaspora living in the US in strengthening relations between the two countries. The session concluded with a Q&A session, which had a lot of participation from students.


NATO’s Relations with the Indo-Pacific 
CIS organized a talk with Ms. Sophie Larder, an officer in the Global Partnerships section of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, on May 27, 2024, to help students understand the relationship between NATO and the Indo-Pacific. The event was an engaging session, during which the guest speaker discussed NATO’s role in the Indo-Pacific at length.



The DPRK-Russian Rapprochement: A Ukrainian Perspective
This event provided the audience with an opportunity to listen to the Ukrainian point of view of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia and their anguish at the cooperation taking place between Russia and North Korea in light of the Russian onslaught. Held on May 23, 2024, the event provided an opportunity to engage with the domestic voices of Ukraine. It aimed at fostering an understanding of the War at a deeper level than what the mere statistics suggest.


Japan’s New Defense Policy and its Implications for Korea-Japan Security Cooperation

In light of the recent changes in Japan’s defense policy, the CIS hosted Lt. General (Retd.) Koichiro Bansho on May 1, 2024, to understand the implications of the changes brought in by the government. Gen. Bansho, currently serving as a Special Advisor to Japan’s Minister of Defense, had plenty of insights to offer to the students eager to understand what the recent changes would imply for Korea-Japan security cooperation. The event witnessed an enthusiastic engagement between the Lt. General and students and concluded with an informative exchange during the Q&A session.
