The Yonsei GSIS Human Rights Hub hosted a special lecture with freelance journalist Raphael Rashid on May 3, 2024, at the New Millennium Hall of the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS). With over ten years of experience working in South Korea, Rashid discussed ways to navigate South Korea’s media landscape. He talked at length about his experiences with the leading media institutions in the country.

Raphael Rashid's writings have been featured in renowned media outlets such as The Guardian and The New York Times. He covered various topics during his talk, including how to enter journalism in South Korea. Providing an insider’s perspective, Rashid focused on his journey as a foreign journalist, highlighting the pros and cons of working as a freelancer in South Korea. He also discussed the challenges facing South Korean media today, particularly the trend of YouTubers posing as journalists. Rashid emphasized the importance of consumers maintaining an open and curious mind to verify the accuracy of the news they consume, which he believes will help reduce the spread of fake news.

The session concluded with a Q&A session, which GSIS students enthusiastically participated in. Rashid addressed questions about the use of AI in journalism and press freedom in Korea, among other topics. He concluded by encouraging the audience to embrace AI and use it effectively rather than fearing it, noting that technological progress cannot be reversed.
