Congratulations on successfully starting at Yonsei GSIS! For some, this marks the start of a journey in a new country, at a new university, and in an entirely new chapter of life—an experience that may seem intimidating to say the least. Read more in this article of the newsletter on how to navigate your way around Yonsei.

Take each day one at a time

With a constant flow of assignments, presentations, and deadlines, it’s essential to take each day at a time and manage your workload effectively. Prioritize time management by using tools such as apps or calendars to organize and schedule your academic and social tasks. By breaking down your responsibilities into manageable steps, you can stay on top of your commitments and reduce any unncessary stress. Remember, consistent organization and thoughtful effort will help you navigate the demands of graduate school successfully!

Step out of your comfort zone and introduce yourself to your peers

Each new semester brings fresh opportunities to connect with your classmates. While some may be with you throughout many courses, others might only be in this one class. Don’t worry—everyone always appreciates making new friends in class! You never know how someone you introduce yourself to might become a great source of information, whether for academic advice, study tips, or even recommendations for great restaurants and cafes.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to your professors

While it may seem intimidating, reaching out to your professors is crucial for truly enriching your Yonsei GSIS experience. Whether it's through attending office hours, reaching out via email, participating in out-of-class field trips, or contributing in class, establishing open lines of communication with your professors will ensure that you make the most out of your academic opportunities at Yonsei.

Study in Yonsei’s world-renowned facilities

Yonsei University is renowned not only for the iconic, ivy-covered Underwood Hall, but also for its state-of-the-art library facilities, thoughtfully designed to foster academic excellence. Whether you visit the expansive Central Library or the specialized GSIS Library on the 3rd floor of NMH, you’ll find quiet study spaces and cutting-edge research resources, all essential for maximizing productivity and ensuring scholarly success.

Break out of the Yonsei GSIS bubble

The GSIS is just one of the many distinguished study programs at Yonsei University. From Career Talks to student clubs to participating in the Yonsei-Korea University joint cheering event, Yonsei GSIS students have multiple opportunities to engage with members outside of their GSIS classmates. Through exploration—and perhaps a bit of trial and error—you may discover new passions, forge lasting friendships, and create unforgettable memories!

Engage in language exchange opportunities

Yonsei University has one of the largest foreign student populations in Korea. Language exchange events or clubs, like Iyagi Hour, can simultaneously improve your language skills and make meaningful connections with peers from all over the world.

Don’t forget to prioritize your physical and mental health

Balance your time wisely by prioritizing your studies and physical and mental well-being. Explore the various restaurants and cafes on and off-campus in Sinchon for nutritious options, and take advantage of the gym facilities and track on campus for exercise. Also, make sure to take advantage of the quieter spots on our beautiful campus, such as Underwood Memorial House, Ansan Mountain, or the Metasequoia forest road to Muak Dormitories, which are perfect for walking, reading, and meditation.

Finally, remember, while this new chapter in your life may seem intimidating, your fellow GSIS classmates are here to support you every step of the way. With each new beginning comes the potential for personal growth, exploration, and achievement!
