Yonsei students have the unique luxury of attending university near some of Seoul's most exciting and busy neighborhoods. With Sinchon, Hongdae, and Ewha University’s Shopping District being within walking distance from Yonsei’s front gates, students often find it all too easy to stay within this bubble, forgetting to step out and explore beyond it. However, with a swipe of a transportation card and a quick ride on the subway, one can find themselves in some of the most interesting, trendy neighborhoods in Seoul. This month, we travel five stops from Sinchon to a once-industrial neighborhood turned into a vibrant hotspot filled with delicious restaurants, quaint cafes, and particular shops. Welcome to Mullae!
One cannot talk about Mullae without mentioning the strong influence of art on the neighborhood. Known as the Mullae Art Village, the neighborhood is filled with murals, graffiti, sculptures, small craft stores, and galleries showcasing local Korean artists. In addition to public art installations and displays, there are multiple local art galleries, mostly free or requiring a small fee, that one can explore. Both the art novice and expert will find themselves happy and enjoying themselves in Mullae.
Additionally, along the streets and allies of Mullae, you will see many restaurants and cafes located in former factory and craftsmen buildings, guaranteeing a unique setting and vibe wherever you go. Some restaurants and cafes are big with high ceilings and exposed metal framing giving a real industrial feel while others are intimate and cozy with only a handful of seats available. Inside these unique buildings, you will find some of the most delicious food on Line 2 with relatively short wait times. Mullae’s eateries have a wide spectrum of cuisine. Everything from Korean classics like barbecued pork belly and grilled pork rinds as well as non-Korean options like Japanese ramen and pizza with nontraditional toppings can be found nestled in the alleys. After eating, you can go for a drink at one of Mullae’s multiple rooftop bars and cafes that provide a beautiful view of the entire neighborhood or you can find one of the places that have live music on the weekend.
Whether day or night, Mullae offers something special for every visitor. With its unique art, charming alleys, distinctive restaurants and cafes, and proximity to the university, Mullae is the ideal spot to explore, relax, and enjoy.
