“Reading Han Kang” Event to Honor the Author’s Literary Achievements

On December 10 at 4 p.m. (local time), author Han Kang, an alumnus of Yonsei University, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature during the Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden. This historic moment marks the first time a Korean has won the Nobel Prize in Literature, rewriting the history of both Korean and global literature.

President Dong-sup Yoon stated, “Han Kang’s Nobel Prize win is a monumental achievement that elevates Korean literature on the global stage and demonstrates the educational and cultural value of Yonsei University to the world. Her literary work transcends violence and suffering to celebrate human dignity and hope—a true embodiment of Yonsei’s spirit of truth and freedom.”

He added, “Inspired by this milestone, Yonsei University will continue to nurture global leaders who realize universal human values and promote Korean literature and culture worldwide.”


To celebrate Han Kang’s historic win, Yonsei University launched a series of initiatives.

The university sent a "Nobel Week Student Delegation," composed of Yonsei students, to Sweden to support and celebrate Han Kang. The delegation participated in key Nobel Week events and engaged with local universities and institutions, enhancing their global perspective and leadership potential as future Nobel laureates.

Additionally, Yonsei shared congratulatory messages via on-campus banners and official social media channels, posting photos and videos from Sweden to bring the celebratory atmosphere to life.

Looking ahead, Yonsei University is committed to supporting Han Kang’s literary achievements as a foundation for increasing the global influence of Korean literature. The university plans to actively promote the messages of peace and coexistence that Han has conveyed through her works by incorporating them into education and research.


As part of these efforts, Yonsei will host an academic and cultural event, “Reading Han Kang,” on December 20 at the Y-Valley in the Yonsei Central Library. The event will feature readings, lectures, and discussions with readers, offering a platform to explore Han Kang’s literary world and foster dialogue between Korean literature and global audiences.


Through its dedication to expanding the global value of Korean literature, arts, and culture, Yonsei University will continue to provide innovative education rooted in the spirit of truth and freedom, inspiring academic excellence and creativity worldwide.
